Dogs 101: Better behaviour – better bond – the five essentials for improving dog behaviour
Dogs are famous for their role as animal companions in today’s society. However, it needs to be said that achieving good, lasting outcomes from this kind of human-animal relationship is not a given. Such bonds take time to build and effort to maintain.
Dog ownership comes with some serious obligations of which good behaviour management is one of the most significant. Those owners who invest time and effort in positively shaping their dog’s behaviour, can expect to reliably obtain a better relationship with their dogs than those who don’t.
Good behaviour imperatives apply to all dogs regardless of size, type or age. The benefits are tangible and they include the health, safety, comfort and the fun of everyone involved including the dogs themselves!
The Australian Institute of Animal Management (AIAM) is dedicated to encouraging a national environment of responsible and competent dog ownership with sound behaviour management practice at a central principle in this.
Dogs 101 is an AIAM public education initiative which seeks to focus community attention on the benefits of positively shaping good dog behaviour and responsible dog ownership. The format of Dogs 101 has been designed to minimise the use of technical and theoretical terms while still preserving the integrity of the ideas involved.
The brochure has been presented in five stages though these are not set in stone. This tried and tested five stage plan has the flexibility to be applied in a variety of situations. For example, Stage 2 (Puppy Socialisation) will not apply to you if you either have, or are planning to acquire an adult dog. Even so, the information on socialisation in Stage 2 is still valuable and worth considering should you decide to acquire a puppy at a later date.
Note that while the five stages of Dogs 101 can be seen to logically follow each other, no stage is wholly separate from any other stage - nor is any stage more (or less) important than any other.
The Institute would like dog owners to think of Dogs 101 as a project that owners and dogs can undertake together – one that will result in a team effort that will reliably help both parties. Remember, it’s never too late to start on the road to a great relationship with your dog. Be patient with your dog, be kind, and most of all, enjoy the time you spend together.
