Geelong, the Destination

Geelong is only an hour's drive from Melbourne and is Victoria's largest regional city and gateway to the Great Ocean Road. Overlooking Corio Bay, Geelong was once a major wool shipping port and today boasts a vibrant waterfront destination. Geelong now has a major airport at Avalon, just 20 minutes from the City Centre, or Melbourne International airport is less than an hour by car from Geelong.

geelongpic2The Geelong waterfront has recently undergone major redevelopments to create a vibrant visitor destination and features many cafes, restaurants, fully restored art deco seawater baths, a yacht club marina, the Carousel and a scenic bay side promenade dotted with brightly painted bollards characters, depicting Geelong's colourful history. Come down to experience the relaxation, go for a walk or bring your bike and cycle along the waterfront.

More than 100 huge painted posts can be seen dotted along Geelong's waterfront. These two metre high figures depict Geelong's history and guide visitors along the foreshore walking/cycling track from Rippleside Park, through to Limeburners Point and the Botanic Gardens. Crafted by local artist, Jan Mitchell, from old timber from a city pier which was demolished in the 1980s. These figures are remarkable works of art representing characters from the city's past.

Geelong is close proximity to the rolling hills, bay views, golf courses, world class wineries and beautiful beaches of the Bellarine. Visit the Point Lonsdale lighthouse and view the ships passing through 'The Rip', surf at 13th Beach in Barwon Heads or the famous Bells Beach in Torquay, home of the Rip Curl Pro Classic. Why not visit many of the local wineries situated in the Bellarine whilst taking time to relax?
