Certificate IV Animal control and regulation
How do I become qualified?
Any person working in the field of animal management, animal control, regulatory services, local laws, environmental health and related sectors is now able to become qualified in the field in which they work. Qualification is obtained through the completion of Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation.
What is Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation?
The Animal Care and Management Training Package has two primary objectives:
- To increase workplace productivity through raising the skill level of workers
- To increase career opportunities for those working or seeking work in the animal management industry.
The content of Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation supports the individual to gain a range of more advanced skills and competency in the field of animal management, giving students the current animal control and regulation qualification status. The topics covered enable the individual to further understand the importance of their role in key areas of the industry and the community.
How was Certificate IV Animal Control and Regulation Developed
In response to industry demands for a well-structured career pathway for animal management officers, recognised Australia wide, a number of organisation have worked together to develop the Animal Care and Management Training Package (RUV40104), from which the Certificate IV Animal Control and Regulation belongs. These organisations include The Australian Veterinary Association, the Urban Animal Management Reference Group, Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia, Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association, various Rangers Associations and many other associations and individuals. Consultation with industry was undertaken over a number of years.
What are the study requirements?
A minimum of 14 units of study (10 core and 4 elective) as listed in the Animal Care and Management Training Package (RUV40104) must be undertaken to receive the Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation qualification. However, any individual is welcome to undertake more than 14 units of study. If a student has completed a Certificate IV from another training package, it is possible to receive cross credits and thus reduce the number of units the individual will need to undertake.
How long does it take?
The maximum duration of this Certificate IV is generally up to two years. For an individual who has been employed in the industry for some time, or has other qualifications, recognition can be granted in order to reduce this length of study time.
How do I complete the certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation?
Study is undertaken via some face to face contact, learning on the job and the completion of theoretical work. Theoretical work would include the submission of case studies or assignments and workplace assessment.
As with all competency training packages, a student must be employed in that position as most of the learning is undertaken on the job.
Can I pick and choose units of study?
Yes
This qualification comprises of units from other training packages, thus an individual may elect to study those in full or have units of competency from other relevant Certificate IV courses recognised. A full Certificate IV can be granted so long as the minimum criteria of 14 units of study is met.
Students may even elect to study any of these units as individual units. For employers or individuals who wish to simply enrol in single, or a select group of units, this too can be organised. The outcome for individual units of study includes a nationally recognised and fully portable Transcript of Results and Statements of Attainment.
Can I fast-track through the Certificate IV?
Yes.
All students are offered the opportunity to have previous studies, work experience, knowledge and skills recognised through the process of Skills Recognition or Recognition of Prior Learning.
This process can take as little as six months to achieve a full Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation. This recognition is based on evidence supporting extensive work experience within the industry, and documented evidence of current competency via means of written submissions including assignments and in most cases, workplace assessments.
Is there a career path for me?
Yes, Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation gives you not only a fully portable and nationally accredited qualification, it also will provide you with:
- Greater career opportunities within the field of Animal Management including supervisor, community response officer, community education officer, animal management project manager and so on.
- Greater respect from your peers, supervisors and community members.
- Greater opportunities to climb the corporate ladder if coupled with Certificate IV’s from related field, such as Certificate IV Frontline Management, Certificate IV Regulatory Services and so on.
What does it cost?
Costs of the Certificate IV will be influenced by how many units of competency are studied and what cross credits or skills recognition might be provided, thus is it best to speak to your Registered Training Organisation (RTO) of choice.
In addition, in each State or Territory, traineeships are released at various times to assist Animal Management Officers gain a Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation. These traineeships are initiatives of State and Federal Governments that will help to enable employers to skill and upgrade the qualifications of their new or existing workers. Conditions do apply in some States, so speak to your RTO or your nearest Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC).
